Island Def Jam Music Group (IDJMG) expands the strength of its executive management team with the promotion of Shawn “Pecas” Costner to Executive Vice President, Def Jam Recordings, it was announced today by Steve Bartels, President/COO, IDJMG. In his new post, Pecas will help lock in and coordinate all frontline activities for the Def Jam label. He will also be responsible for directly helping connect the artists with their plans of release, nurturing new signings, as well as directing the cultural and iconic label forward into new platforms. Mr. Costner, who is based in New York, will report directly to Mr. Bartels.

I look to Pecas for applying his energy and deep artist relationships towards helping us drive Def Jam on the path to continued greatness.”

Mr. Costner, an eight year veteran of IDJ, was promoted to Senior Vice President in 2010. He first joined the company in 2005, as Vice President, Lifestyle Promotion. Mr. Costner came to IDJ from Arista Records, where he was Senior National Director of Urban & Crossover Mixshow Promotions since 2003. He started at Arista in 1999, as National Director of Rap Music and Mixshow Promotion. In 2001, he was promoted to Director of Urban Promotions for the Northeast Region.
Mr. Costner began his career in music in 1994, as National Director of Street Promotion for Penalty Records. At Elektra Records the following year, he became a partner in the Dream Team Marketing and Promotions firm, one of the creators of the Mixshow Power Summit, one of the biggest music industry conventions. In 1998, he moved to Gee Street/V2 Records as Director of Rap Promotion, prior to his arrival at Arista the following year. Mr. Costner attended the State University of New York at Cobleskill, where he earned an Associates Degree in Business Management in 1990. He later attended the City University of New York at Lehman College, where he was graduated in 1992 with the Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management.
