Oran “Juice” Jones- The Rain

Not a rapper, but a singer, Juice combined Eddie Kendricks’ sweet falsetto, Wilson Pickett’s bad attitude, and Richard Pryor’s street-level sense of humor. “The Rain” his first single and only hit, is a fairly conventional song of betrayal until Juice stops singing and starts talking shit.  Launching into a kind of lover’s court-martial, he strips his girl of all the expensive gifts and credit cards with which he’d showered her.  This hilarious monolog, coached into existence by Russell, is what made the song a hit.  Released in July of 1986, “The Rain” went to #1 on the hot R&B Singles chart.
