MTV Jams, MTV’s cross-network hip-hop authority, which includes a 24-hour hip-hop television channel, website and social networks, today unveiled the selections for its annual Fab Five list, which honors the year’s most outstanding new hip-hop artists. The announcement was made live during today’s episode of RapFix Live which is simulcast on MTV Jams and MTV.com. Today also marks the debut of a new on-air campaign for MTV Jams that will feature artists as the face of the brand.
The class of 2013 are (in alphabetical order): August Alsina, Chance the Rapper, Gunplay, Schoolboy Q and Travi$ Scott. Beginning today, each artist will receive a week long spotlight and will have their music videos, live performances and interviews featured across MTV Jams’ television, web and social channels. In addition, a Fab Five collection will be added to MTV’s Artist Platform (Artists.MTV.com), a music discovery site that powers MTV/CMT/VH1’s network of 60 million passionate music fans online and 100 million homes on-air. The list was compiled internally by MTV’s hip-hop experts and music curators.
“It’s a blessing to be selected as one of MTV Jams’ Fab 5, and to be the only singer means a lot. It shows that what me and my team are doing isn’t being boxed in. We’re reaching people in an authentic way,” said August Alsina. “I grew up on Jams. It’s where I was introduced to new videos and new artists. They always represented artists on the rise like myself. You never forget who supported you first.”
“It’s awesome to be a part of MTV Jams’ Fab Five. Just to be featured on MTV and to be considered as one of the five artists to look out for means so much,” said Chance the Rapper. “I’m a big fan of MTV Jams because it plays music all day and exposes music that no one would otherwise know about.”
“I think it’s super cool to be chosen as a one of the Fab Five members,” said Travi$ Scott. “My music is art and an experience, get ready cause there’s so much more to come.”
“THank you MTV Jams for Having me, I swear on my life being on MTV was sometHing I never tHougHt would Happen….. So tHanks again, for Helping me witH my goals… Peace – puffy,” said ScHoolboy.
Beginning today, MTV Jams will roll out a new on-air campaign that will feature the Fab Five lineup as well as some of today’s hottest hip-hop stars including Miguel, 2Chainz, B.o.B. and Future as the face of the channel.
Conceived on MTV Jams in 2005, the Fab Five is a collection of the year’s most outstanding new hip-hop artists who have made an impact on everything from touring to releasing their debut albums. Fab Five alumni include Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Miguel, A$AP Rocky, Young Jeezy, Machine Gun Kelly, Big Sean and Meek Mill.
“As hip-hop continues to evolve, the Fab Five list looks to celebrate the artists that are driving the genre forward,” said Yomi Desalu, Vice President, MTV Jams. “These five artists represent a diverse cross-section and have the potential to both push and challenge the confines of the genre.”
“The Fab Five franchise speaks to the heart of Jams, which has always been rooted in exposing the newest music and talent in Hip Hop & R&B, said Elena Diaz, Vice President of MTV’s Music & Talent Programming Strategy. “We’re very excited to step out on a new group of emerging stars we’ve placed our bets on. With a fresh new aesthetic for our Fab Five campaign this year, we’ve created a platform to give them the biggest push yet, and expose them to fans at the next level.”
With the love and hustle of the Crescent City running through his veins, August Alsina is eager to follow in the footsteps of the NOLA music legends that paved his way. His recently inked deal Def Jam Recordings looks to be a great step in the right direction.
Chicago native, Chance the Rapper, emerged with a vengeance this year, appearing on MTV’s Music Independence Day, and winning fans over all around the world by opening for Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Eminem. His Acid Rap mix tape has been lauded by critics, and has the major labels clamoring for him to sign with their respective record company
Gunplay is an original member of Rick Ross’ clique (a.k.a. Triple C’s now known as Maybach Music Group). The Miami native is set to embark on his first solo venture. Controversy had clouded the wildcard rapper for some time now, but the groundswell he’s currently creating with his music and visuals has him on track to shine as a soloist.
Schoolboy Q is the next artist set to launch from the camp TDE; home to the Fab Five alumnus, Kendrick Lamar. The LA native will be touring all summer. The bucket hat wearing rhymer is ready to carry the TDE flag in a major way, with his debut solo project set to launch by year’s end.
Travi$ Scott, the eclectic Houston representative is already garnering comparison to Kanye West; for his production ability, introverted native, and what people are deeming his musical genius. Signed to Epic Records and with heavy co-sign and affiliations with the likes of T.I. and many others, “La Flame” is ready to heat up the industry.
MTV Jams originally launched in 2002 as a 24-hour digital music channel devoted exclusively to hip hop music videos and programming. In 2012, it was expanded to serve as MTV’s overarching hip-hop brand across television, social and web. The channel now reaches nearly 29 million homes and has seen considerable growth in households (up an impressive 38% since 2008).
